MY CAREER

As a child who naturally gravitated towards babies and younger children, I of course started my journey into the childcare industry as a babysitter at the ripe age of 14. Keen to work, I looked after the children of many families most weekend evenings before later becoming a daytime nanny to one of those families. Naturally, when looking for workplace experience childcare was at the top of the list and I was offered a traineeship at a local daycare centre to obtain a certificate III in Early Childhood Care & Education which was a fantastic experience and really set it stone that this was something I wanted to do.

Once achieved, I decided to work casually as a 'relief' staff member across several different childcare centres as I missed the experience of working within a family home and wanted to focus on nannying opportunities also. I will forever be grateful of this experience because it taught me to be more flexible and gave me great insight into how different childcare centres run rather than only experiencing one centre.

When my husband and I started looking at buying our first home I was keen to gain some more permanent work which lead me to a childcare centre in which I remained at for 5 years and during this time I studied to obtain my Diploma and started working as a fully Qualified Early Childhood Educator. A totally valuable experience being in a leadership role and being responsible for the learning curriculum of the children.

It was then that I left to have my own children in 2018 and 2020, the most rewarding job of them all. I believe you become the most well rounded carer and educator after you become a parent, gaining a ton more care, compassion and awareness. As well as giving me experience with day to day care of a child that you just can't gain with someone else's child.

When returning to work, wanting something that was a little more flexible than a standard job I thought being a nanny again would be a great role for me and I was blessed to find an amazing family who were new parents to twins. Such a blessing of a job and what sparked my study into sleep, infants and multiple births. Once my time with the family had ended and I was doing more and more sleep consultations I launched 'The Night Nanny' taking on short term nanny roles with infants and twins, becoming an infant and overnight specialist.

After many years now, I often end up in conversations with people who are curious about my job, how it came to be and what's involved and I constantly explain it as "the best job in the world". Caring for babies (who are 10x easier than my own children, everyone knows your own children are the hardest!!), knowing that each week another family is sleeping soundly through the night because you were able to help them and being in the background while families experience the newborn bubble and getting to witness that over and over again!! Best job in the world!!
